Firewalls, VPN & Network Security in Colorado Springs

Firewalls, VPN & Segmentation · Colorado Springs

A firewall is only as good as the rules nobody has read in three years.

We size, install and configure the firewall, split the network so a compromised laptop cannot reach the server, give remote staff a VPN that works, and hand you the rule set in writing — so the next person can tell what is deliberate and what is left over.

Sized for your circuit

A firewall that cannot inspect traffic at your internet speed becomes the bottleneck, and someone eventually turns the inspection off. We size it for the line you actually have.

Rules with reasons

Every rule documented with what it is for and who asked for it. The ones nobody can explain are the ones that get exploited.

Segmented, not flat

Staff, voice, guests, cameras and building systems on separate VLANs, so one infected device does not have a clear path to everything else.

Patched, not forgotten

Firewall firmware is a favorite target precisely because it never gets updated. Yours gets checked and updated on a schedule.

What the work covers

Network equipment rack with status lights and connected cabling
The boundary between your business and the internet, configured on purpose and written down.
  • Firewall selection and installation — sized to your circuit and user count, installed with the configuration backed up before and after
  • Rule review and cleanup — what is open, why, and what can safely close; including the port forwards from a system that was decommissioned years ago
  • Network segmentation — VLANs for staff, voice, guests, cameras, point-of-sale and building systems, with rules between them rather than an open path
  • Remote access VPN — site-to-site between offices, and client VPN for staff, tied to your Microsoft 365 accounts and MFA rather than a shared password
  • Guest and IoT isolation — visitors and smart devices get internet and nothing else
  • Wireless security — WPA2/WPA3 Enterprise where it fits, per-SSID VLANs, and a guest network that is not the same key printed on the wall since 2019
  • Content and threat filtering — category filtering and intrusion prevention where you want it, tuned so it does not block the tools people need
  • Logging — logs kept long enough to be useful, and pointed somewhere they survive the device being wiped
  • Firmware and lifecycle — updates on a schedule, and honest notice when a device is past end of support

Where we usually start

Step 1
Look at what is there
The current firewall, its rules, its firmware, and how the network is laid out behind it. Read-only — nothing changes yet.
Step 2
Findings, in plain language
What is exposed, what is unsupported, and what it would cost to fix — ordered by risk. Yours to keep either way.
Step 3
Change window
Replacements and rule changes happen after hours, with the old configuration saved and a way back if something unexpected breaks.
Step 4
Documentation
The rule set, the VLAN map, VPN setup instructions for staff, and the admin credentials — handed to you.

What it costs

Frequently asked questions

Our internet provider gave us a router. Is that a firewall?

It has a firewall in it, and for a two-person office that is sometimes enough. What it does not give you is segmentation, usable VPN, logging you can read, or updates you control. If you have a server, card payments, patient records or CUI behind it, it is not enough.

Which brands do you work with?

Mainstream business firewalls — the recommendation depends on your circuit speed, user count and whether you need site-to-site VPN. We will tell you what we are proposing and why, including what the annual licensing costs after year one, which is the part that surprises people.

Can you clean up the firewall we already have?

Usually, yes, and it is the cheaper starting point. A rule review on a supported device often buys you a couple more years. If the device is past end of support, we will say so — unpatched firewalls are actively targeted.

Will segmentation break our printers and phones?

It can, if it is done without checking what talks to what. That is why segmentation gets planned against the actual device list first, and cut over in a window where we can watch it. Printing and phones are the two things we verify before leaving.

Do we still need a VPN if everything is in Microsoft 365?

Often not for email and files — that is what conditional access and MFA are for, and a VPN adds nothing there. You still need one to reach on-premises servers, line-of-business applications or equipment that was never meant to face the internet.
