IT for law firms.

Confidentiality is an ethical duty, and the rules expect reasonable efforts to keep client information from getting out. We set up email, accounts, documents and remote access to meet that standard, at published prices.

What law firms need from IT

Confidential by default.

Small firms handle the same sensitive matters as large ones: settlements, trust account transfers, medical records, discovery.

Reasonable efforts, documented

The ethics rules ask lawyers to make reasonable efforts to prevent unauthorized access to client information (ABA Model Rule 1.6(c); ABA Formal Opinion 477R on securing client communications). We put the safeguards in place and write down what was done.

Trust account and settlement fraud

Fake wiring instructions sent from a forged or look-alike address are a standard attack on firms that move client funds. Email that cannot be forged in your name and a callback rule for any payment change close the usual opening.

Documents and matters

Matter files in one place with access set by matter and by person, instead of copies in personal inboxes and on USB drives.

Secure remote work

Attorneys working from home or the courthouse get in through multi-factor sign-in and encrypted laptops, not an open remote desktop port.

Encrypted email when it matters

A simple way to send a message or file encrypted when the matter calls for it, using the encryption built into Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace where your plan includes it.

Breach readiness

A short written plan for what happens if an account is compromised. ABA Formal Opinion 483 describes a lawyer’s duties after a data breach, including telling affected clients.

What we found when we checked law firms email in El Paso and Teller County

In September 2026 we read the public email records of 821 local business domains that receive mail. These are the numbers for law firms. No business is named, here or anywhere.

21 of 29

Law firm domains could be impersonated by email (72%)

14

had no DMARC record at all, so nothing tells receiving servers to reject forged mail

2

were fully protected: SPF, DKIM and DMARC at enforcement

Start with the free email security check

Clients and opposing counsel act on email that carries your firm’s name, sometimes with money attached. The check reads your domain’s public records and emails a plain-English report to an address at that domain, so it reaches the business that owns it and nobody else. Nothing is installed and nobody signs in to anything.

If it finds problems, we fix them for a fixed $495 per domain, done within a week of your go-ahead, with a before-and-after report. Run the check → · Read the full local report →

Which plan fits a law firm

Most small firms fit Secure Office, with an Advisory project for a security review or a move to a new system. Published prices, a $299 one-time setup on the monthly plans, and engineer time only with your OK. Compare all plans →

An honest note on scope

We are not lawyers and do not give ethics opinions; your firm decides what reasonable efforts mean for its practice, and we put the technical safeguards in place. We do not support practice management or billing software itself; we secure the accounts, devices and networks around it.

Do the ethics rules really cover IT?

Yes. ABA Model Rule 1.6(c) and Formal Opinion 477R treat securing client information, including email and devices, as part of the duty of confidentiality. What counts as reasonable depends on how sensitive the matter is.

What happens if an account is compromised?

We contain it, find out what was accessed and document it. ABA Formal Opinion 483 describes a lawyer’s duties after a breach, including telling affected current clients, and Colorado law has a 30-day notice rule for personal information. Your firm makes the legal calls, with our findings in hand.

We already use Microsoft 365. Aren’t we protected?

Not by default. Microsoft 365 makes DKIM and DMARC available, but most businesses never turn them on. In our local research, only 2% of Microsoft 365 domains were fully protected.

Is there a contract?

Front Desk and Secure Office are month to month after setup. Project work is scoped and approved in writing, piece by piece.
